Powerful Personal Truths

POWERFUL PERSONAL TRUTHS

John 9:39

“Jesus said, ‘For judgment I have come into the world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.’”

Some people are born with a disability. Through no fault of their own—or their parents—they are born with trials that “normal” people cannot fathom. Since God never makes mistakes, we must conclude that we don’t understand His reasons. Jesus told why one man was born blind in John 9:3: “Neither the man nor his parents sinned.” Jesus said. “But this happened so that the work of God could be displayed in his life.”

Jesus spit on the ground, mixing mud with His saliva. He put the mud on the man’s eyes (John 9:6). After the man washed in the Pool of Siloam, he could see. And yet some people claimed, “No, he only looks like him.” (John 9:9). The healed man couldn’t believe his ears. He’d been begging all his adult life. These people passed him every day!

When Jesus touches people, they never forget that encounter. They tell others about Jesus’ work in their lives, as a personal testimony. [Test-a-MONE-ee] means evidence, demonstration, or proof. No one can challenge someone’s personal testimony.

But the Pharisees eagerly called Jesus out for working on a Sabbath (John 9:14). Bullying began in the Garden of Eden when the serpent challenged Eve, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’” (Genesis 3:1b). The Pharisees acted like bullies during this healing investigation. They intimidated the man’s parents in John 8:18-20.

“But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him, he is of age; he will speak for himself.” they defended their son in John 9:21. Frustrated, the Pharisees recalled the man.

“‘Give glory to God,’ they said. ‘We know this man is a sinner.’” (John 9:24).

“He replied, ‘Whether his is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind and now I see.’” The blind man’s testimony in John 9:25 is a fact. We saw in Invitation devotion that the Pharisees had it in for Jesus. So they chose to disbelieve this man’s testimony.

Jesus was referring to being spiritually blind in the opening Scripture. Not much has changed in over 2,000 years. People still argue their way around facts they don’t like.

Take Home Nugget

Jesus works miracles in people’s lives today, and their personal testimonies are powerful truths. Those who disbelieve facts are spiritually blind today, just like the Pharisees. Check out the lesson, linked below, to read how Jesus got the last word.
