Powerful Personal Truths

POWERFUL PERSONAL TRUTHS

John 9:39

“Jesus said, ‘For judgment I have come into the world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.’”

Some people are born with a disability. Through no fault of their own—or their parents—they are born with trials that “normal” people cannot fathom. Since God never makes mistakes, we must conclude that we don’t understand His reasons. Jesus told why one man was born blind in John 9:3: “Neither the man nor his parents sinned.” Jesus said. “But this happened so that the work of God could be displayed in his life.”

Jesus spit on the ground, mixing mud with His saliva. He put the mud on the man’s eyes (John 9:6). After the man washed in the Pool of Siloam, he could see. And yet some people claimed, “No, he only looks like him.” (John 9:9). The healed man couldn’t believe his ears. He’d been begging all his adult life. These people passed him every day!

When Jesus touches people, they never forget that encounter. They tell others about Jesus’ work in their lives, as a personal testimony. [Test-a-MONE-ee] means evidence, demonstration, or proof. No one can challenge someone’s personal testimony.

But the Pharisees eagerly called Jesus out for working on a Sabbath (John 9:14). Bullying began in the Garden of Eden when the serpent challenged Eve, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’” (Genesis 3:1b). The Pharisees acted like bullies during this healing investigation. They intimidated the man’s parents in John 8:18-20.

“But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him, he is of age; he will speak for himself.” they defended their son in John 9:21. Frustrated, the Pharisees recalled the man.

“‘Give glory to God,’ they said. ‘We know this man is a sinner.’” (John 9:24).

“He replied, ‘Whether his is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind and now I see.’” The blind man’s testimony in John 9:25 is a fact. We saw in Invitation devotion that the Pharisees had it in for Jesus. So they chose to disbelieve this man’s testimony.

Jesus was referring to being spiritually blind in the opening Scripture. Not much has changed in over 2,000 years. People still argue their way around facts they don’t like.

Take Home Nugget

Jesus works miracles in people’s lives today, and their personal testimonies are powerful truths. Those who disbelieve facts are spiritually blind today, just like the Pharisees. Check out the lesson, linked below, to read how Jesus got the last word.

Seek God’s truth and you will find

The Extra Mile

THE EXTRA MILE

Matthew 5:41

“If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.”

Elementary school kids played softball against middle school in a game to raise money for charity. Fifth grader Brad faced Walt, a seventh grader who beat him up last May. (See Fire! A Story of Grace eBook that’s available on www.biblestudyforkids.com).

“Hey Brad, toss me the ball!” Walt said.

Brad recognized Walt as one who attacked him. “Grr,” Brad mumbled. Jesus’ words from the opening Scripture flashed into his mind. He decided to go the extra mile. Picking up the softball, Brad tossed it to Walt. He warned, “Be ready when I’m at bat!”

Teasing people is part of friendly sports banter. Brad enjoys competing in any sport. Facing Walt’s team spiked Brad’s desire to win today. Preparing to play on a higher level, Brad didn’t forget “the golden rule” of fair play and good sportsmanship. That is Brad’s secret of victorious living through faith in Christ. Brad treats others the way he’d like to be treated—even Walt, who beat him up.

Brad learned that God loves all people, not just him. He chooses to grow beyond, get past his hurt the moment he forgives people. Brad tries to go “the extra mile” when helping or serving someone. As a result, Brad grows spiritually through every trouble in life. Jesus strengthens Brad to conquer every problem.

Life trials are not the enemy. Life troubles offer opportunities to grow up. We all can try to be like Brad. Whatever batters us on the outside builds us up in the inside—when we believe in and trust Jesus. Troubles do not defeat us. We rise up stronger and taller than before, able to go the extra mile. “Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57).

Think about flowers in a rain storm. Their sorry faces look so sad. All bent down, flowers look defeated. But rain isn’t the enemy. Rain nourishes the soil that nourishes plants. In the sunshine, the flowers perk up tall and bright.

People smile when presented a bouquet of flowers. They smell their fragrance, and smile some more. Displayed flowers greet other people with a smile. God’s creation serves God. Even flowers go the extra mile!

Take Home Nugget

At Brad’s turn to bat, he saw Walt playing center field. Brad hit a line drive between center and left fields, and ran safely to second base. He turned and smiled at Walt, who just grinned.

Lord, use whatever storms batter me on the outside to grow and strengthen me on the inside. Help me to stand tall and go the extra mile for others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sorry!

SORRY!

3rd of 3 devotions in RSVP series

Luke 14:23-24

“Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that My house will be full. I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of My banquet.’”

Who is the master? Who is the servant? The meaning of Jesus’ dinner parable probably blew over the Pharisee’s heads. The master is God the Father. The servant is the Holy Spirit. The Jewish Pharisees and teachers of the law refused Jesus’ invitation to come and “eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.” Believers are sorry for Jewish people’s loss of not believing that Jesus is their Messiah. We pray that the veil be lifted so they accept Jesus Christ as Lord (2 Corinthians 3:14).

The opening Scripture’s phrase, “make them come in,” doesn’t sound like God, does it? He never forces entry into a person’s heart. How are people drawn to Jesus, and RSVP His invitation to eat at the feast with a hearty “Yes?” How will God’s house ever be full of people?

Remember the parable of the Lost Son (Prodigal Son) in Luke 15:11-32? People are reluctant to come to God in the beginning of their lives. The devil tempts people to feel and taste the world’s goodies. “God doesn’t want you have fun,” he lies.

Unfortunately, people have to learn the hard way:

A rich man’s young son requested his share of his dad’s estate. Dad divided everything, to give his son his share. The boy headed out into the world. He lived it up in comfort for a little while. But soon he was broke. He begged for a job so that he might eat. He realized his mistake when he longed for the corn cobs that the pigs ate.

Horrified, a humbled boy heads home. His dad ran to meet him while he was still a long way off. Dad throws his arms around his son. He orders a robe, sandals, a ring, and a feast to be made ready welcoming him home. This paints a real scene that shows our heavenly Father celebrating every time lost people are found and return home. It contrasts eternal life in Christ against eternal death to those who reject Him.

The Father patiently awaits His kids “to come in,” so His house is “made full.” How tender. How lovingly God treats His precious kids!

Take Home Nugget

The Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are sorry for those “thrown outside into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 8:12).

When life shows you the hunger of the beast,
Run to Jesus. Attend His feast!

Excuses

EXCUSES

2nd of 3 devotions in RSVP series

Luke 14:21

“The servant came back and reported this to his master [that everyone gave excuses why they couldn’t attend the banquet]. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and the alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’”

Jesus’ dinner parable to the Jewish teachers of the law suddenly got serious. As we saw previously in Invitation devotion, Jesus was on stage. Dinner guests judged Jesus’ every word. And Jesus took full advantage of the spotlight. His parable warned that He came for the whole world, and not just for the Jews.

How cleaver for Jesus to refer to Gentiles, (non-Jewish people), as the poor, the crippled, the blind or the lame! Naturally, the Jewish teachers of the law who were dining with Jesus knew that they are the elite of all mankind! After all, God chose the Hebrew people to be His possession (Deuteronomy 32:9). He even gave them their own country Exodus 3:8)! God’s Son—the Messiah—would be a Jew!

“I am here right now!” Jesus must have wanted to scream.

They didn’t recognize Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah, and rejected Him. Isaiah 53:3 said they would.

The parable’s excuses for not attending the feast were lame. Luke 14:18 says one man just bought a field and must go and see it. Verse 19 says another just bought five yoke of oxen, and wanted to try them out. Verse 20 tells of a man who just got married. He decided that accepting salvation wasn’t important right now. Maybe later?

Believers are extremely grateful that Jesus invited the whole world to this feast! The Wise Men were the first to announce Jesus to the Gentiles (Isaiah 42:6). What are Gentiles’ excuses for refusing Jesus’ invitation of salvation?

Some say that they’ll accept Jesus “later.” They’re having too much fun right now. Others say they’re not religious....Every excuse to delay accepting Jesus as Lord has been given. That’s dangerous. People die suddenly every day. Their excuses die with them. Their time is up.

Take Home Nugget

People don’t need to “get right” or “clean up their act” to come to Jesus. Jesus welcomes people just as they are.

Why not accept Jesus as Lord today? Your name will be recorded in the Lamb’s Book of Life (Revelation 21:27). The Holy Spirit will come to you right now (John 14:15-17). The Father will adopt you into His family (Ephesians 1:5). You will be a new creation, born again (2 Corinthians 5:17). Jesus covers you in righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Come to Me today!
Tomorrow may be too late; don’t delay!

Invitation

INVITATION

1st of 3 devotions in RSVP series

Luke 14:15

“When one of those at the table with Him heard this [Jesus’ instructions that when you give a banquet, don’t invite your friends, but invite the poor, the lame, the blind], he said to Jesus, ‘Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.’”

Wherever a group of people are gathered, there will always be someone who tries to impress the person of honor. A birthday party is given to celebrate someone’s birthday. We bring gifts, play games, and have fun trying to make that person feel special. All eyes are on the birthday honoree.

This RSVP series invites readers to “eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.” RSVP is a French request, repondez s’il vous plait, that means, “Please respond.” In the English language, it’s understood as, “Returned Signed Very Promptly.” The reply tells the host how many will or will not show up. Hosts need a head count, or the number of people attending an event. Enough seats and enough food label parties, “successful.” How embarrassing if the host runs out of food for guests who come for dinner!

But the kingdom of God has no such restrictions.

One Sabbath, Jesus was invited to dinner at a prominent Pharisee’s house. The guests were teachers of the law, and they watched Jesus carefully. Asking Jesus questions, they hoped to trip Him up—so to find fault in Him. They were jealous of this Nazarene carpenter! The one who said the opening Scripture hoped that Jesus would agree with him. After all, he quoted Isaiah 25:6. But in response, Jesus told a parable:

“A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’” A parable is a story with a moral. Jesus’ parables showed situations that everyday people could understand. His way of storytelling is proven to stay with people longer than simply preaching to them. How many get Jesus’ point?

Of course, my readers realize that Jesus invites all people to “eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.” Everyone there is a saved child of God.

Take Home Nugget

Jesus’ invitation remains open to everyone who’s alive. After death, your RSVP is revoked. And it’s too late to change your mind. You could miss the best feast of all time. All God’s kids will be there. Won’t you reserve your seat today? Check out the lesson, below, to find the many ways Jesus extends this invitation.

Come to My feast!
All God’s kids will be there, from the greatest to the least!

Faith Says, "Have a Nice day!"

FAITH SAYS, “HAVE A NICE DAY!”

John 14:27

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

“I am so scared!” Tiffany admitted to Missy and Cassie, her fifth grade classmates at recess. “My dad lost his job, and now we’ve got to move!”

“Oh no!” Cassie exclaimed. She threw her arms around Tiffany. “I am so sorry to hear that.” Cassie looked at Missy, whose eyes misted up. “Missy, tell us how you survived last year.”

Missy swallowed hard, and looked away. When she looked back, she dashed away tears. “I remember it like it was yesterday, Tiffany. I was devastated when my dad lost his job.” (See Work of Honor—Privilege of Prayer devotional series posted in September, 2012.) “Remember how you prayed for me at recess, Cassie?” Missy asked.

“That’s right!” Cassie exclaimed. “We didn’t waste any time. We prayed for Missy’s dad to get another job right away. And after a couple weeks, God brought him a job. They got to stay in their home. Right, Missy?”

“Yes,” Missy said. Moving closer, she placed her arms over Cassie’s hugging Tiffany. “We thought that we’d have to move, too. But God answered prayers, and we kept our home! We will pray for you, too. Would that be OK?” Missy whispered.

Tiffany didn’t move, but mumbled, “OK.”

Cassie began, “Heavenly Father, you can do anything! Please bring Tiffany’s dad a new job right now. Tiffany is scared. They could lose their home. Please help Tiffany, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

“You have faith in Jesus, don’t you, Tiffany?” Missy asked as she and Cassie released their hug.

Tiffany nodded her head, sniffing back tears. She said, “That was beautiful. I feel light, even happy now! I believe that God will help us stay in our home. Thank you for caring so much.”

“So, what do you want to play? Recess will be over soon.” Cassie reminded them.

Tiffany giggled her response, “Let’s play four-square!”

Take Home Nugget

Jesus promises believers His peace in the opening Scripture. He wants us to never be troubled, or afraid. Jesus handles every problem that believers pray to Him asking for help. His peace is for real. Tiffany’s faith in Jesus knocked out her fear, and replaced it with joy.
Trust your faith in Jesus, who’ll combat every trouble. Release your fear and hear faith say, “Have a nice day.” Jesus’ peace brings joy because God wants happy kids.

Check out the lesson, linked below, to see how you can have nice days during troubling times.

Faith in Jesus gives believers His peace—that replaces fear with joy.

Positional Identity

POSITIONAL IDENTITY

Part 12 of 12 in Train to Reign Series

John 24-26

“I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves Me must follow Me; and where I am, My servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves Me.”

Buddy, fourth grader Miguel’s mixed breed dog, trotted—leash in mouth—to his master. As Miguel snapped this leash on, buddy’s tail wagged happily. Buddy knew that they were going outside to have fun. As long as Buddy is with Miguel, he’s happy, no matter what. Buddy is identified positionally with Miguel.

Now that faithful readers have reached #12 of this Train to Reign series, you are in position to be identified in Christ. The salvation experience is awesome! Believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit, our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life (Ephesians 1:13-14, Revelation 21:27. In baptism, believers are crucified (under water), and raised with Christ (born again, 1 Peter 1:23). God sees you righteous, but salvation isn’t God’s end game for His kids.

The Father desires that we be identified in practice what we are position-ally. Our replacement new-creation life becomes an extension of Jesus Christ. Christ is more than Lord of our lives, He becomes our lives! This is the deepest life experience anyone can ask for—and the only way we can achieve God’s best.

The deep life experience is a journey you take with Jesus. He will strip away everyone and everything on which you depend. He uncovers layers of self-deception, so you’ll see yourself the same way God sees you. Embarrassed, you’ll discard selfishness, self-sufficiency and pride. You’ll learn total dependence on Christ. This is the only way people ever bear fruit.

Whoever chickens out—refusing to go with Jesus on this journey—will become the opening Scripture’s single kernel of wheat. But whoever willingly dies to self, (surrender one’s will—like when Jesus willingly died for us on the cross), will yield an abundance of fruit.

God wants so much more for you than salvation. He has much to give you, and even more that He wants to accomplish through you. Won’t you position yourself to be identified in Christ? The rewards are as awesome as salvation itself!

Take Home Nugget

Miguel and Buddy. You and Jesus. May Buddy’s happy tail wagging mirror your smiling face as you journey with Jesus.

Heavenly Father, This is scary. Help me to overcome my reluctance, and grip Jesus’ hand for a life-changing journey. Amen.

Daily Motivation

DAILY MOTIVATION

Part 11 of 12 in Train to Reign Series

Luke 9:23

“Then He said to them all: ‘If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.’”

Apostle Paul abandoned the world’s ways when he met Jesus. (Jesus has that affect on everyone He meets). Since Paul had persecuted Jesus’ followers (Acts 9:1-2), he was motivated daily to preach the gospel after meeting Jesus. Acts 13:9 shows that Saul also went by the name “Paul.”

Paul’s daily motivation was to preach Christ crucified. Paul was so motivated, that he took the message of Jesus throughout the known world—planting churches wherever he went! He was following Jesus’ example. Jesus was also motivated daily. But Jesus’ motivation was the cross.

Imagine that the first thing you knew for certain as a child was that you would die on a cross! That’s a gloomy future. Living with that knowledge would make any person depressed. But not Jesus. The cross motivated Jesus to complete His mission on earth perfectly. Along the way, He made great friends—as well as bitter enemies. His influence turned the world upside down. Jesus’ passion for people—even those He knew hated Him—is undeniable.

Jesus loves you, too.

Jesus’ love ought to motivate His followers daily. When people believe in Jesus—invite Him into hearts, declaring Him Lord of their lives—they are “Saved.” This is what Jesus meant in John 3:7: “...You must be born again.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

As new creations, Romans 6:6-7 teaches, “For we know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be done way with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.” New creations are declared righteous (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Believers are Jesus’ bodies on earth (1 Corinthians 12:27). We’re motivated by what our Father prepared in advance for us to do (Galatians 2:20). Jesus didn’t die so that we’d sit idly in pews on Sundays listening to God’s Word. His crucifixion freed us to achieve victory doing what we’re created to do.

Since eternal lives are at stake, how can believers keep silent about our victory? We must be motivated each day to share our Good News about Jesus to a hurting world.

Take Home Nugget

The cross motivated Jesus. Jesus motivated Paul. Jesus motivates His followers to correctly choose which activities to pursue every day.

Heavenly Father, What motivates me every day is more selfish than divine. Teach me Your way, Jesus. Motivate me daily to bring You glory. Amen.

Believers' Victory

BELIEVERS’ VICTORY

Part 10 of 12 in Train to Reign Series

1 Corinthians 1:17-31

Verse 30: “It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.”

Now Train to Reign series becomes personal. This is where believers walk a different path than the path the world walks. We’re not only citizens of earth; Saints’ forwarding address is heaven. The opening Scripture defines you as righteous, holy and redeemed. Where, O Death, is Your Victory? devotion showed that believers, as Jesus’ church, are waiting for Jesus’ return to keep His divine appointment with us.

It all happened on the cross. There is no shame in wearing a cross. It signifies believers’ victory! Because Jesus triumphed in death, He won victory for His followers on earth. We look eagerly to the bodily change that will happen when Jesus returns for us. But glorious bodies are only the tip of the iceberg of “cross stuff” that you can claim right here and now.

The cross brought salvation to you and every believer in Christ. If Jesus hadn’t shed His blood and died in our place, we’d have to stand before God in judgment! Even the best people are in sinners’ boat, if it weren't for the cross. We’d all be sunk! We’d be raised to eternal death after our earthy lives end—instead of eternal life! But victory came the day you accepted Jesus as Lord. Live joyfully, fellow believer—regardless of any circumstance.

Romans 6:6-7 reminds believers, “For we know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin....” You’ve been freed from sin. God, living inside every believer, empowers us to be free from sin today!

Every time you obey God, Satan is defeated—again! The devil lost the battle when Jesus was resurrected from the dead. And now, he’s lost his power over believers’ lives. The total list of human sin was nailed to Jesus’ cross. Now, no sin that the devil accuses you of will stick! Our heavenly Father sees you as blameless, righteous, and holy—all because you believe in Jesus!

Take Home Nugget

It’s no wonder that you’re a follower of Jesus! He met all your needs on the cross. He adopted you into God’s family, where you belong. Jesus confirmed your value. Jesus guarantees you a victorious life.
Where is your mail being forwarded?

Dearest Jesus, Thank You for claiming me as Your own. I am so grateful for what you did for me on the cross! Teach me to show my love for You through total obedience, now and forever. Amen.
