Annoying Humility

ANNOYING HUMILITY
Kingdom Kids devotions authorize Jesus’ LORDship over our lives.

Philippians 2:1-11

Philippians 2:6-8:  “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
“but made Himself nothing, taking on the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death—even death on a cross!”

Pride is my hang-up.  Would I have made myself nothing?   No.  Only the Holy Spirit can transform human pride to Christ-likeness.

While it’s taken me a long time to admit my prideful attitude, “humility” vexes me.  Humility chips away my inner armor.  It glares at me when Jesus washes His disciples’ feet in John 13:3-16!

Humility is an attitude where a person doesn’t act like a big shot, even when praised in front of peers.  Jesus behaved as though He had nothing praiseworthy to claim.  He “made Himself nothing, taking on the very nature of a servant.”

            In other words:

            A.  Humility does not claim rights and privileges.  Jesus is 100% God!  Isn’t that bragging rights?  Instead, Jesus claimed to be just another guy.  He left home and began a walking ministry, sleeping outside on the ground.

            B.  Humility willingly serves others.  Jesus came as a baby, learning everything human.  After healing all who flocked to Him, He washed His disciples’ feet.  THEN, He    allowed Himself to be tortured and nailed to a cross!  He died that horrible death in order to offer people forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

            C.  Humility focuses on others.  Jesus’ purpose coming to earth was to demonstrate the Father’s love.  Ever since creation—we’ve been His target and purpose—since people are 100% dependent on God.

            D.  Humility obeys God.  Jesus arrived on earth with His own “To-do” checklist.  But Jesus had to accomplish everything the Father’s way.  (See the lesson linked below to see Jesus’ awesome jobs that the Father assigned Him).  Jesus explains in John 5:19, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing, because what the Father does, the Son does also.”

Respecting authority sometimes makes no sense to me.  Some people don’t deserve respect.  Who am I to judge Romans 13:1-2?  “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.”
Hebrews 13:17 confirms, “Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. … Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be no advantage to you.”

The second time Jesus comes to earth, He’ll conquer and rule the world.

Come, Lord Jesus!
