Alpha & Omega

ALPHA & OMEGA

Ninth of nine in Who is Jesus? Advent series

Revelation 21:6:  “He said to me: ‘I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End.  To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.’”

Apostle John writes a book as a prisoner on the Mediterranean island of Patmos.  One Sunday, John is literally “carried away” in the Spirit while worshipping.

The last book in the Bible—Revelation—is John’s worship masterpiece.  Transported by an angel into the presence of the resurrected Christ to record Jesus’ testimony and the vision that “must soon take place,” John begins Revelation 1.  The book of Revelation challenges readers’ imagination and intelligence, certainly deepening our awe of God.

“Because the time is near.”  (See the lesson that’s linked below).

John introduces himself in Revelation 1:4-5, … 6: “I, John, to the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from among the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

“To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by His blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve His God and Father—to Him be the power and glory forever and ever!  Amen.”

Jesus speaks in Revelation 1:8: “‘I am the Alpha and Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.’”

Revelation 22:12-13, 20a, “Behold, I am coming soon!  My reward is with Me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done.  I am the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

“I am He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’”

As the Lord of glory, Jesus inspires constant angelic songs of praise.  Psalm 24:1 is one example: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it; for He founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.”

Take Home Nugget

Jesus shows His followers the path to His place.  Colossians 1:18 confirms Jesus’ lead: “And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and the firstborn from the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy.”

Intersecting Faith and Life, Jesus has so many descriptions because He cannot fit into just one word.

Thank You Jesus, for filling all our needs.  Wherever we are in life, You carry us through!
