The Way

THE WAY

Sixth part of nine in Who is Jesus? Advent series

John 14:6:  “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the father except through Me’”

            Jesus sounds cocky, doesn’t He?

Even twelve year old kids don’t mind Jesus’ self-assurance.  Jeremy and classmate Cassie brag about it!  “I wonder how old Jesus was before He figured out that He is God’s Son?” Jeremy asked a crowd of their friends one day on the playground.

            Cassie answered, “Twelve.”

The classmates looked at Cassie like she were nuts.  (Jeremy and Cassie had a secret plan).  Jeremy asked, “How can you know that, Cassie?”

Cassie smiled while answering, “The Bible story says that Jesus was twelve when His parents lost Him on the way back home from Jerusalem.  Why else would the story give Jesus’ age?  They went to Jerusalem each year for the Passover feast.  Usually kids would ride with relatives, so His parents weren’t concerned at first.  Retracing their steps three days back to Jerusalem, Mary and Joseph found Jesus in the temple courts answering questions and listening to the teachers.”  (Luke 2:42-49.  See the lesson linked below).

The other kids listened to Cassie’s explanation and nodded their heads in agreement.  So, we do have clues that Jesus figured out pretty early who His real Father is.  He wasn’t cocky right away, though.  He listened to the teachers.  Luke 2:52 says that “the child grew and became strong; He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him.”

It wasn’t until He was thirty that Jesus left home to get baptized and begin preaching.

            What did Jesus preach?

Jesus preached the Kingdom of God.  Mark 1:14-15 says, “Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.  ‘The time has come,’ He said [John the Baptist was in prison]. ‘The kingdom of God is near.  Repent and believe the good news!’”  Jesus warns people that “No one comes to the Father except through Me!”

Jesus ALWAYS told the truth.  Whenever Jesus begins a passage with, “Surely I tell you,…” then whatever follows is a truth that Jesus wants us to learn.

Jesus softens hearts hardened by sin and deceit.  That muscle springs to life when people repent.  John 20:31 says, “But these things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.”

Take Home Nugget

“I am the good shepherd,” Jesus claims in John 10:11.  “The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

John 3:17 says, “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.”
