Abraham's Seed

ABRAHAM’S SEED

Second of nine devotions in Incarnation Parallel Bible Study series

Genesis 12:3, Acts 3:25

Genesis 12:1:  “The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.’”

After Eve and Adam broke God’s one command of never eating from the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil,” people have been born into sin.  But God had a plan to fix what the first couple broke.  His plan included His Son Jesus.

Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Belief in Jesus fixes what Adam and Eve broke—communion with God.  Jesus offers people a choice of eternal life, as opposed to unbelievers’ eternal death.

The human spirit never dies, so every soul will spend eternity somewhere.  People’s choice is made before death where/how they’ll spend eternity.  The Father planned for Jesus’ birth—from Abraham in the Hebrew race—in order to provide people that choice.  Jesus arrived forty-two generations after Abraham lived.

Genesis 12:2-3 shows God’s sevenfold promise to Abraham when he’d obey God’s command to leave Haran.  1) Make Abraham into great nation.  2) God’s blessing Abraham.  3) Make Abraham’s name great.  4) Abraham would be a blessing.  5) God would bless whoever blesses Abraham.  6) God would curse whoever cursed Abraham.  7) All peoples on earth will be blessed through Abraham.

Abraham had problems.  But he also had great faith.  Abraham’s wife Sarah, was unable to have children!  Abraham saw this as a big problem.  How would he ever be a great nation?  But Abraham did what God commanded.  He left Haran with Sarah, his nephew Lot and all their possessions.  He was already seventy-five years old!

When they arrived in Canaan, God showed Abraham the land that would be his (Genesis 12:7).  The Canaanites already lived there, and they had a famine.  So Abraham took his family (and possessions) to Egypt, then on to Negev, Bethel, ending up in Ai.  Abraham and Lot became so prosperous that both their herds couldn’t survive together on the same land (Genesis 13:6).  So, Abraham and Lot chose different lands, and they parted company (Genesis 13:11).

Abraham overcame every problem.  Every one of God’s words came true.

Take Home Nugget

Abraham is the Patriarch of both Judaism and Christianity.   Patriarch means father. The parallel Scripture is Acts 3:25:  “And you are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant God made to your fathers.  He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all the peoples of the world will be blessed.’”

Celebrate your heritage of being in God’s family through Abraham!
