Exodus 33:14-23 recaps Moses’ “Show and Tell” story of seeing God.
Moses chiseled two (more) tablets like the first ones. Don’t you just hate having to do things over?
But Moses was tiptoeing quietly the second time he made the tablets.
Moses had smashed the first stone tablets on which God had written the Ten Commandments … because the Israelites were very bad kids while Moses was away. Upon seeing the people acting up when he returned, Moses deliberately threw the tablets hard to the ground because he was very angry (Exodus 32:19-34).
“Okay, take two more tablets like the first ones that you broke and I’ll write the Ten Commandments again,” God instructed Moses. “Come to Mount Sinai alone.” God added, knowing the surprise that He planned for Moses.
The Hebrew word hesed is translated into English as meaning steadfast love. That deep emotion is difficult to translate. Who can get their head around a love that Apostle Paul tries to describe: neither death nor life, angels nor demons, life nor death, the present nor the future, no power—NOTHING can separate us from God’s love? (Romans 8:37-39).
Human love is like the morning dew. It evaporates—quickly. God’s love is everlasting.
Human love is like a blooming flower. It wilts and dies. Papa’s love never ends and is new every morning.
Human love is like ocean waves. It comes and goes. Our Father’s love is rock-solid.
We learned in Who’s in Charge? lesson that God is love. We NEVER deserve God’s love. Regardless of how much we sin, His love forgives and is merciful. He loves unconditionally. That means we can never sin beyond His love.
Yet, God disciplines us. Hebrews 12:6 says, “because the Lord disciplines those He loves, and punishes everyone He accepts as a son.” (See also Revelation 3:19).

Take Home Nugget
Exodus 33:20 names God’s surprise for Moses, “But, you cannot see My face, for no one may see Me and live.”
What did Moses actually see? Exodus 33:22-23 says, “When My glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove My hand and you will see My back; but My face must not be seen.”
Holy Lord, Thank You that Your steadfast love for us remains forever! Amen.

What an honor it is to meet you!
My background is a life time of worship, but seriously following Jesus came with age. Spiritual maturity is a leap of faith. Sometimes we don’t know what we’re missing until living on the edge of God’s leading. My life of self sufficiency ended abruptly when losing my job as an analytical chemist after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Now living on the edge of God’s leading has become a way of life that I wouldn’t trade for anything else.
Surrendering one’s will to the Lord can be scary. Why did I wait so long to do it? Diving into an intimate relation with the sovereign God of creation is the most secure position in the universe.
